Aqueduct Reimagined

In April 2022, Mayor Evans introduced the Aqueduct Reimagined and Riverfront Promenades project, as part of the ROC the Riverway / Building Bridges to the Future initiative. Aqueduct Reimagined will reveal the historic Erie Canal Aqueduct and transform the Broad Street Bridge into a dynamic public space that uniquely celebrates the rich history and culture of Rochester, New York. This project will include removal of the upper vehicular deck of the Broad Street Bridge, enhancement of the historic 1842 aqueduct below, and creation of an iconic location that is inviting to individuals of all socioeconomic statuses and physical abilities. In addition, the construction of new adjoining riverfront promenades and multimodal connections will facilitate seamless connectivity on both sides of the Genesee River. The Aqueduct Reimagined project is fundamentally about the City of Rochester revealing itself, but there is the possibility of a far more profound revelation that brings together the people of Rochester around a multi-cultural identity.

urbanAC partnered with WXY Studio to develop a community-centered process to explore designs that provide views inward and outward.

Successful inclusive design requires not only engagement through partnership with local stakeholders including artists, small businesses, and community members, but also design, construction, programming and stewardship by a diverse group of community organizations that have a long-term ownership stake in the success and sustainability of the project. Elements of the design that help to center inclusion and belonging will include opportunities to celebrate the city’s diverse ethnic populations, programming executed by and attracting multiple populations, and the creation of a safe and walkable environment where everyone feels welcome, day, night, weekday and weekends.
